Sign up to adopt a tree!
PCEC's Livingston Loves Trees program started in 2021, and provides and plants free trees for Livingston residents committed to adopt, water, and care for the tree for many years to come. Montana-hardy trees are given away to qualified sites, on a first-come, first-served basis by neighborhood.
These are larger diameter trees (1.5"-2") that, when combined with planting, are valued between $750-$1000. Thanks to generous donors, grants and an incredibly committed team of volunteers, we aim to add 1,000 trees to Livingston's community forest in the next decade.
To be considered for a free tree, you must:
- Reside in the City of Livingston and preferably at the tree planting location.
- Make a multiple-year commitment to watering and caring for the tree.
- In the first three years, your young tree will require 10-30 gallons of water per week, watered at 2-3 different times per week depending on soil type, until the root system establishes.
- Mature trees will also need to be watered once a week when soil is dry.
- Note: This commitment remains in effect even if the property is sold or managed by renters or a rental company. Please do not apply for a tree if you plan on selling your property within the first 3-5 years or someone cannot commit to watering.
- Have adequate space for a tree: in your boulevard, a public space in your neighborhood, or in your front yard if you do not have a boulevard – spaces where it can be enjoyed by others.
- Coordinate with Tree Team volunteers on a planting location, date, the City permit process and care schedule.
Trees are given away in the order in which the application is received and planted in May if the site is suitable for a tree. Trees are not guaranteed until they are physically in the ground, as we often find unanticipated obstacles throughout the process so we appreciate your patience and please speak with us if you have any questions.
If you qualify but do not receive a tree this year, you will be automatically rolled onto next year's waiting list. We run out of trees every year, so get your application in as early as possible.
Please also consider donating to the Tree Fund: "Plant it forward" by donating to the tree fund and/or volunteering with us to plant and monitor trees around town.
