The Montana legislative session is beginning, and we're expecting there to be a lot of activity in the next few months. PCEC is planning to be watching bills following wildlife, water quality, land-use planning and more.

Already, bills have been introduced that want to remove our right to a "clean and healthful environment." At PCEC, we know the importance of this right firsthand: Our landmark case, PCEC vs. DEQ, relied on this constitutional right to help stop an industrial-scale gold mine up Emigrant Gulch.

Douglas Tallamy lecture

Friday, January 6, 7 p.m.

Crawford Theater, Emerson Center for the Arts and Culture, Bozeman

New York Times’ best-selling author, Dr. Douglas Tallamy, one of the founders of Homegrown National Park, a national grassroots movement that encourages planting of native species in private backyards as a solution to our biodiversity crisis, will speak. You can stream the event here.

Join HRDC’s Dean Williamson and the Park County Community Foundation as we consider the role of 501(c)3s in advocacy. How do we as nonprofit leaders understand and engage in shaping policy? How do we generate support for policies that serve our constituents? And how do we speak up for the needs of our communities - needs that mean so much to those who live and work in Park County and surrounding areas?

Elk River Books, 122 S. Second Street, Livingston

Journalist and author Todd Wilkinson will discuss his new book, Ripple Effects: How to Save Yellowstone and America’s Most Iconic Wildlife Ecosystem, on Thursday, Jan. 19, at 7 pm.

Ripple Effects is both a celebration of Yellowstone’s wildlife as well as a dire warning that we may be loving the park to death. Read more.

Climate Advocacy Day in Helena

Friday, January 20, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Montana Capitol Building, 1301 E. 6th Avenue, Helena

PCEC is co-sponsoring this climate rally in Helena. The rally, Protect Our Home: Montanans for a Livable Climate, will be a day of climate advocacy and action, skill building, and connecting around the common cause of nurturing a resilient and healthy Montana for all. Please RSVP. 

The day will include family friendly activities, a rally with speeches, information sessions, potential lobbying opportunities and time to meet with legislators. Activities will begin at 11 a.m. and we will gather for a rally in the rotunda from 12 - 1 p.m.
